Nothing is perfect, especially not free scripts that come with a web space account. But I am determined to master at least some of these scripts and make the web sites I dream about when I’m at work happen. I install them, customize them, and things never work out well. Some of the scripts seem flawed. Others are over my head. Today I bought a book on CSS which will hopefully help me with templates.
Tonight, I’m starting a comprehensive list I return to for compiling everything I know about these scripts, and ideas on what I might use them for. Some of them are unsupported and difficult to find information about, and I will be mining for that too.
1. pLog. Apparently the newer versions are wonderful, but this is some old version with a crude browser uploading interface. I tried using it for a while, and it closed my browser while I was typing a post, which makes it absolutely useless. Here is some of what my pLog seems to be able to do:
a. Posts with cut off the main page; save drafts and post to specific categories.
b. Link manager with link categories, like a blog roll.
c. User profile (useful for multiple users)
d. Nested resource albums. I assume a “resource” is any kind of media file. This could be useful for voice or video posts and of course photos, illustrations.
e. Add registered users to a specific blog (you can create an unlimited number of blogs).
f. Add plugins to the template: this is where my knowledge drops off. I do not yet understand how to make templates for this pLog or edit already existing templates. Pulling up the template files in Dreamweaver might help, though. It has with other programs. The plugins themselves are a total mystery to me, but I am intrigued by anything that will make my site more dynamic.
g. I can block IP addresses or specific things a user posts.
h. I create the users myself and give them usernames, passwords and settings.
i. Automatically generates Atom and RSS feeds, great.
2. Mambo. This looks far over my head. I will try to list what it can do.
a. It suggests ways to edit the default template and CSS file. That, at least, I can do.
b. There are components, modules and mambots (?). I do not understand the difference between them at all. Installed components: banners, mass mail, newsfeeds, polls, syndicate and web links.
c. The administration panel looks amazing and is easy to use, even if I don’t know what I’m using. It looks better than any freebie site I’ve seen, including Livejournal.
d. Media manager with an 8 meg upload limit. Not good for video or sound files.
e. Going down the list: site statistics, template manager, module organizer, user manager and trash can.
f. Menu manager… I don’t understand.
g. Content by section, make sections for articles, static content manager, front page and archive manager. Basically it breaks everything down into parts for easy editing. That is great.
h. On site mail system/mailboxes between users.
i. Modules can be set to different access levels for registered/anonymous users.
j. Mambots… scripts over my head? Look like search scripts. Won’t be making those any time soon.
Wow… that’s it. Maybe Mambo isn’t that scary. It would make a good gothic lolita group blog/community or something for dolls. Not for my personal stuff because I want to include big media files in whatever engine I use.
3. PhpCollab. Ever since I saw Backpackit I have been very jealous: wanting to have a place to do a private accounting of my stories/projects. I looked at this briefly one night and I won’t bother to do a detailed summary, since there isn’t much to it. My biggest problem with it is that the main categories aren’t customizeable so there are a lot of sections for “Clients” since it is a business-oriented script. I would develop it for myself or if I was collaborating fiction or something with someone else, since it is not presentation-oriented, not a real “web site.”
4. AdvancedGuestbook. Does anyone use guestbooks any more? I was planning to donate this to the GothRom site since it looks like we will never get a better web server that can do scripts. This is a PHP protected guestbook, so no penile enlargement bots.
a. You can privately message the webmaster.
b. Guests can upload web addresses and instant messenger, picture uploads, comments. Block words and IP addresses.
c. Change style of present template.
d. I can edit every template page if I know PHP, ha ha.
e. And a smilie set.
5. SMF. This is a forum I was thinking of donating to GothRom, since it looks solid, customizeable and well-protected with PHP. I know all too well how to use forums, and running it looks simple, at least on the surface. You make categories and boards…
