The place I liked best in Des Moines was the Robert D. Ray Asian Garden. It was on the other side of the Des Moines River across from our hotel, and I had numerous enjoyable excursions taking my dog Wei to the garden and to other places across the river during my days there.
I really enjoyed reading each of the plaques in the garden from different Asian diaspora communities acknowledging the help that Des Moines former mayor Robert D. Ray provided to their communities by giving them a refuge and an opportunity to start over after leaving an unstable country.
