- Background: Frances was born to an aristocratic human family in Cristalle. She has a sweet, acquiescing personality and rarely comes into conflict with others. When Frances is a young adult, her parents arrange for her marriage to Jude. As a casual acquaintance, Jude appears kind, and Frances feels neutral toward the arrangement. After Frances gets to know Jude better, she learns about his childhood friendship with Dresden and his present obsession with Dresden. After her engagement to Jude, Frances explores Jude’s family property, which bears traces of the dark history of Jude’s uncle, Jude’s namesake, who conducted experiments to restore the dead to life and to render himself immortal. The elder Jude was once in love with Ophelia and brought Ophelia’s possessions, after her disappearance, to his family property. As an engagement gift, the elder Jude gives Frances an embroidered daffodil bedspread that once belonged to Ophelia. Frances begins hanging out with her fiance, Jude, and his crowd, which is essentially the crowd that had gathered around Dresden before Dresden abruptly departed for several months. She encounters Johnny, who appears to be anticipating Dresden’s return, and grows fascinated with him. When Dresden returns, Johnny uses Frances’s interest in him to cause trouble between Frances and Jude. Even though she is a proper, straight-laced person, Frances finds Johnny difficult to resist and hangs around him despite her better judgment.
