Dresden (Dream of Doll Twing-key) is the reincarnation of Josian’s forbidden love, Giselle.
Background: At 23, Josian found his twin, Josette, whom he had tried to find for years. Josette began working as a governess for the same employer as his long-time close friend Bryony, a secretary, which leads to Josian discovering her. Josian brings Josette to his mansion, where he intends to salvage her reputation, introduce her to society, and find her a good match. Josian is overly controlling toward her, and Josette is submissive to his wishes but emotionally distant from him.
Josian learns that Josette has been romantically interested in Bryony, so he forbids her to see Bryony again because Bryony has a long-time engagement, something he never told Josette during their affair. Josette later learns Josian’s reasons for forbidding her, and she forgives him, but the relationship between them is always distant.
Josian hires Willow, a village girl, to be Josette’s maid, pressing upon her that part of the conditions of her employment are that she must report back to him any of Josette’s movements or communications. He is determined that Josette remain completely cut off from Bryony and be protected from further scandal.
Josian has been engaged since childhood to a young woman, Gabrielle, whom he has barely ever seen. Though the engagement was set up by his deceased father, Josian intends to fulfill his promise and invites Gabrielle’s family for an extended stay at his estate. Gabrielle’s younger sister, Giselle, falls in love with Josian. Giselle has a sensual, blatant nature very different from her stoic, indifferent sister, and she shows her attraction to Josian to see if he returns her feelings. Though Josian tries very hard to be indifferent to her, he desires her. Giselle arranges for them to go riding on horseback around the estate alone, when she tells him of her feelings, sure he returns them, and tells him that if they feel this way toward each other, he must not marry her sister. They can still marry each other and find happiness.
Josian refuses to give credence to his feelings for Giselle and rejects her, marrying Gabrielle out of duty and the arrangement that has been in place for years.
In post-apocalyptic Cristalle, Josian moves in bohemian circles in Munich and the French countryside. He meets an eccentric American, Leslie Walker, through his twin, Josette. Josian has long been interested in spiritualism and past lives, remembering elements of his previous unsatisfying life. He feels a deep yearning to rectify his mistakes and find Giselle, for whom his love and passion were heavily suppressed in his past life.
Leslie has been in communication with Dresden, a young woman who also believes in past lives, in an online forum he participates in and meets her at a diner in Amarillo, Texas, where he reveals Josian’s photo to her. When Dresden confirms that this is the man she loved in a previous life as Giselle, Leslie alerts Josian that he has found Giselle, and Josian flies to Amarillo for a ceremony commemorating Leslie’s founding of the Church of Satan in Amarillo. Dresden participates in the ceremony as the divine feminine, and Josian recognizes her instantly. From there, their relationship proceeds.
