Background: Ophelia is a Creature, brought to life by Shelley, a scientist. Her body and spirit are an amalgamation of two dead women: Cambriel, older sister of Johnny, and Valentine, a trapeze artist. Ophelia is haunted by the memories of Johnny’s sickness and death as well as Valentine’s life as a circus performer and untimely death. Gradually, Ophelia learns that Shelley, whom Ophelia has grown to love, experimented on Johnny, causing his death. She learns that Jeremy, a werewolf, was once in love with Valentine and, attacking Valentine while in the form of a wolf, killed her.
