there’s a chill in the afternoon twilight as you pass through the bramble-covered gates. ahead, the glass of a summerhouse window catches the last lights of day, illuminating the surrounding casement with an unearthly glow. the remains of a garden sprawl on either side of the path, browned vines covering trellises and lying dormant on the silent earth.
a figure passes by the summerhouse window, intercepting the light. you see the silhouette of a heavy auburn-colored dress and a coil of pale hair, sternly pinned against the head, but you miss the face.
